初期の中山道は、塩尻、洗馬、本山を通らず、下諏訪宿から贄川宿を結ぶ最短経路でしたが、この区間が難所続きであったため経路が変更され、塩尻も宿場として整備されました。
最盛期には旅籠が70軒以上あり、松本藩六万石の玄関口として栄えたそうです。
また、ここは北へ向かう北国街道や南へ向かう三州街道との分岐点でもありました。
しかし、明治16年の大火で町の大部分を焼失したため、当時の様子を留めるものは少ないですが、キャッシュポイントから見える小野家住宅など、貴重な文化財も残っています。
キャッシュは、宿場の中心地だった場所近辺に設置されています。

Early Nakasendo did not go along Shiojiri, Seba, Motoyama and went from Shimosuwa Post Town to Niekawa Post Town directly,
but because this section had a series of a difficult place, a course was changed, and Shiojiri was maintained as a post town, too.
There was a hotel more than 70 houses in the golden age and seemed to prosper as a doorway of the Matsumoto feudal clan.
