This one lane concrete bridge on State Highway 3 used to be the main road north, but now appears to serve little purpose other than offer a safe pedestrian crossing of both the river and the state highway.
There is off-highway parking at the north end of the bridge outside the family-friendly Onaero Bay Holiday Park. But be warned the grass is rather swampy, so if you drive on it you will get stuck, and it's not too good for street shoes either.
This little bridge is often a meeting place for kids and parents on holiday at the camp as they fish over the parapet trying to catch a herring or the occasional kahawai.
It also provides access to the nearby Onaero River Scenic Reserve - a 9.4 hectare scenic bush reserve of walking tracks on both sides of the river.
A handwritten sign near GZ gives the direction to Onaero River Road, suggesting pedestrians "Please use steps under bridge - Don't Cross Highway".

PLEASE, do not try to remove the cap, but do unscrew the cache container
