New Alresford, or simply Alresford, has a population of around 6k (2001). It has a heritage railway, brewers and was founded in the 12th century as an idea of Henri de Bois, brother of King Stephen. The nearby civil war battle of Cheriton led to the edge of the market town being razed, and much of the medieval town was destroyed in subsequent fires. Much of the town was rebuilt in the 18th century. (From Wikipedia)
