THERE IS NOT A CACHE AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. HAVE FUN DOING THE WORD FIND PUZZLE COMMEMORATING THE BUILDING OF THE HIGH LEVEL BRIDGE IN EDMONTON. SOME OF THE PUZZLE LETTERS WILL REVEAL TWO CLUES THAT WILL HELP YOU DETERMINE WHERE THE CACHE IS LOCATED.


HIGH LEVEL BRIDGE OF EDMONTON - GEOCACHE WORD FIND PUZZLE

This is a puzzle cache that can be done by the whole family. It is educational and provides history about the building of the High Level Bridge in Edmonton.

This is a commemorative tribute to the efforts of The Civil Engineers of Alberta , Canadian Pacific Railway, as well as the Cities of Strathcona and Edmonton. The Historic Steel Truss Bridge was constructed between 1910-1913 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, The Province of Alberta, the City of Strathcona ,The City of Edmonton, and the Government of Canada.

The structure towers 49meters above the North Saskatchewan River. Steel trusses provide the framework to support the bridge between the concrete piers and the steel legs. The bridge crosses over the river valley, 755 meters from the north to the south. There are a total of 28 spans consisting of what engineers call Pratt or Warren Truss spans. These trusses provide a frame to support the bridge horizontally from one side of the river valley to the other.

One of the rivet hammers used during the construction of the High Level Bridge, has become part of the Edmonton area Ritual of “The Calling of an Engineer” when an engineer receives his or her degree.

At it’s time of construction, the bridge was unique to Western Canada facilitating the travel of automobiles and pedestrians on its lower deck, and streetcar and railway traffic on the upper deck. The bridge contributed to the transportation of goods and people between the communities of Strathcona and Edmonton. It increased the economies of the two cities and in 1912 the City of Strathcona amalgamated with the City of Edmonton.

Daily streetcar traffic ceased in 1951 and railway use in 1989. A tourist streetcar now runs seasonally on the upper deck. In 2014 LED lights, were added to the bridge and can be turned on in a variety of colours, creating a visual work of art to coordinate with various community activities or tributes.
