Geocache Description:

This is a natural spring in Varnell, GA.

This spring is part of the Conasauga River Watershed. The Conasauga River originates in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Ga. Most of the headwaters are in Nation Forests. This is one reason the water has excellent quality. The spring here in Varnell was formed due to the Limestone rock underground. Water flows up from the cracks in the limestone and have created a small pool on the surface, before flowing of in a little stream, which eventually drains into the Coahulla Creek, a tributary to the Conasauga River. Along side the water, many natural plants have taken root that thrive on the moist conditions. There are signs that mark what is growing along a .3 mile nature trail. The spring along with the foliage makes this little park a very beautiful and educational place to visit.

Though there is a sign that says the water is not "approved" as a water supply, locals have been coming to this spring for decades with empty water containers and gathering the clean, cool spring water to take home with them for drinking water for their families.

To get credit for the earthcache:

Bring along with you a CLEAN container (a solo cup or water bottle is fine) to catch some water in. At the mouth of the spring, catch a cup of water. Email me and answer the following. A. Is the water clear or cloudy? B. (pour some of the water over your hand) Is the water cool, luke warm or hot? C. What, from the information you have read, caused A& B to occur?

Pictures are encouraged with your log, but not required.

There are picnic tables, a nice, short  trail through the woods, and of course, the wonderful, cool water to enjoy.

No wading allowed at this site.

bring bug spray in summer if you walk the trail. It is not required, but it is worth your time.

CONGRATULATIONS to Cat-Ladies, GMAW, and, LIL-C ON YOUR FIRST TO FIND!!
