Geocache Description:

These caches are on some of the rural roads of Calhoun County. Enjoy the less traveled roads and see some unusual, interesting and historic places.

This cache has been placed in the immediate area of the Kampsville Ferry.

The Kampsville Ferry on the Illinois River has been operating since the early 1840s when the town was known as Beeman's Landing. It was named so after James L. Beeman the ferry operator at the time. Stephen Farrow purchased the ferry operation from Beeman and the town’s name was changed to Farrowtown.

The name Kampsville was made official on March 6th 1872 in honor of Captain M. L. Kamp who moved into Calhoun County in 1863 and set up a general store and post office in Silver Creek just north of present day Kampsville. Captain Kamp served as president of the village board and was also a postmaster at Silver Creek.

The State of Illinois purchased the Kampsville ferry in 1941. The ferry now runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, weather and river conditions permitting.

Bring a writing instrument to sign the log – this cache has a small log sheet so sign with date and name only.

You are searching for a camo painted Magnetic Small Tube Container that holds only a log sheet.

Bugs, Insects, Critters, Snakes or Poisonous Plants could be present. Search accordingly.

Access to this cache is by a gravel parking area.
