Il Castello Mediceo fu edificato in età longobarda, e fu acquistato dalla famiglia de'Medici nel maggio del 1567.
Grazie alla famiglia de'Medici, il castello acquistò il suo aspetto rinascimentale e fu di proprietà di questa famiglia fino al 1894, anno della morte dell'ultimo discendente maschio de' Medici, Giuseppe.
Dalla famiglia de’Medici, il castello fu ereditato prima dalla famiglia dei duchi di Miranda e poi dalla famiglia principesca dei Lancillotti di Lauro.
Nel 1980, Donna Maria Capece Minutolo, vedova Lancillotti, vendette il palazzo per 270 milioni di lire ad una società del boss della camorra Raffaele Cutolo.
Infine nel 1991 il Castello fu confiscato in base alla Legge Rognoni-La Torre.
Dopo quattro anni, l’8 settembre 1995, il Castello Mediceo fu affidato al Comune di Ottaviano ed è diventato la sede dell’Ente Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio.
