Geocache Description:

This geocache is located at Calgary's steepest paved public roadway (alley in this case) which at it's steepest point is about a 30.5% grade. In comparison, Calgary's steepest road over on 4a Street NE is about 14.5% and Edmonton Trail is about 11%.. Second Avenue NE (the first road north of this geocache) has been closed to traffic for over 10 years now but I used to remember driving on that street and it was very steep as well and probably was Calgary's steepest regular street (not including alleys) before it was closed.

Cycling up this alley would be quite the challenge for most people and if you're in your vehicle while searching for this geocache, then you could use this as an opportunity to test your parking brakes.

As for the geocache itself, it is a micro sized metal canister and has room for small tradeables or trackables but it does not have a writing device in it - best to bring your own pen or pencil. Please also ensure all camouflage is put back in place after you have returned the cache container to the location you found it.

Parking notes: There is on street parking available nearby - just be very mindful of what the parking signs say with respect to when and where you can park. If you're quick, you could even stop in the alley as it is not a busy roadway but please ensure your parking brake is operating properly.

Seasonal access: If there is snow on the ground in the vicinity of this geocache, you may very well not be able to access the area it is located in and this despite it being a paved alley. The city of Calgary will close this alley if conditions warrant and I know from personal experience that it would only be walk-able during winter snow/ice conditions if one had cleats on and even then it could be tricky. It is suggested not to attempt this geocache if there is any amount of snow or ice down on the pavement as you will most likely fall if on foot and go for a good slide. If you're in a vehicle, do not, I repeat, do not attempt to drive either up or down this alley in any sort of slippery winter conditions or frosty conditions as it will end badly for you and your vehicle.
