Geocache Description:

Orasul Satelit

RO:

In Otopeni se afla:

  • Institutul National de Geriatrie si Gerontologie “Ana Aslan”
  • Aeroportul International Henri Coanda Bucuresti

Satellite City

Otopeni is located in the Romanian Plain, in the portion of the former Woods of Vlasiei, at 14 km North of downtown, being a satellite town of the capital.

By decree of 14 February 1587, Mihnea Turcitu - prince of the Romanian Country - gives the monastery Holy Trinity, half the village Islazul, half the village Hodopeni (today Otopeni) with mills and Gypsies, all donated by Dobromir ban, Master Vilaia and their son, Michael Postelnicul.

On 20 May 1620, Maria, great Baneasa, gives back Holy Trinity Monastery (later Radu Voda) half the village Hodopeni with Ruman given by Master Vilaia, commanding the Ruman to listen. Historian Constantin Giurăscu believes that Hodopeni village name comes from an Hodopa or Hodoba.

At the end of the nineteenth century, the village was composed of two villages: Otopeni Lower and Otopeni Upper.

In Otopeni are:

  • National Institute of Geriatrics and Gerontology „Ana Aslan”
  • Henri Coanda International Airport Bucharest
  • Chess Team  „CS Otopeni”, who won the world title in 2005, at the category of 16 years.
