Geocache Description:

The Cache is located at the Kaieteur Visitor Centre within the Kaieteur Natural Park. The Park was the first established protected area in Guyana and one of the earliest protected areas in South America. You can travel in to Kaieteur by airplane, or over land (which entails boat rides & hiking). The difficulty rating refers to the search when flying into the area, which is the most common method of transportation by visitors.

Kaieteur Falls, located in Guyana, South America, with a straight drop of 741 feet, is one of the most impressive single drop waterfalls in the world, and is 450 ft in width. Named after Old Kaie, the Tashao (Leader) of the Indigenous Amerindian Patamona Tribe, Kaieteur translates literally to “Kaie’s falls”. Legend has it that Kaie canoed over the falls as a sacrifice to the Gods to save his people from another invading tribe. The rock formations next to the waterfall seem to form a face, which locals and tourists alike agree that it could be Old Kaie’s face etched into the wall, as a reminder of his sacrifice.

The Park has been considered for World Heritage Site status, but it’s close proximity to the Chenapou Indigenous Village prevents it from meeting the size specifications, as expansion would disturb this centuries old village. After marveling at the sheer magnitude and indescribable grandeur of the falls, take some time to check out the endemic Golden Frogs, who live their entire lives in the giant bromeliads in the area, the vibrant red / orange Cock of the Rock birds, or gaze at the 2.2 billion year old crystallite carbon stone rock formations.

GPS capability is limited due to lack of Wifi or cellular phone signal from local carriers, but due to the sparsely populated area, the cache is very easy to find.
