John Findley, Veteran of the Civil War

John enlisted as a Private at Big Creek Church which was once here by this cemetery. Men from around western Tuscaloosa County gathered in June of 1861 to join the Tuscaloosa Plowboys and they elected James Mayfield from Moore’s Bridge as their captain. They left Tuscaloosa to train some 30 miles south of Memphis and there in camp most of the Tuscaloosa Plowboys contracted the measles. They were isolated and detained until the measles had passed through the ranks, but by then the Alabama regiment they were to serve with had departed. So the Tuscaloosa Plowboys were assigned to the 38th Tennessee Regiment.

With the 38th Tennessee the Tuscaloosa Plowboys fought at Fort Donelson, then at the Battle of Shiloh. Just south of Shiloh, at Corinth, Mississippi, John Findley was wounded.

After rejoining the Regiment, Findley was then captured at Spartanburg, South Carolina and imprisoned at Bowling Green Kentucky. Findley was part of a prisoner exchange in 1863, and was able to rejoin the Tuscaloosa Plowboys of the 38th Tennessee at Chattanooga, Tennessee.

At some point in his service with the 38th Tennessee, John Findley was promoted from Private to 1st Lieutenant.

Lieutenant John Findley was discharged April 25, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina and like the rest of the soldiers discharged at the end of the war, had to find his own way home.
