Did you know the "Fortune Cookie" is an American made cookie based off of a Japanese version?
They go by many names such as: suzu senbei (“bell crackers”), tsujiura senbei (“fortune crackers”), or omikuji senei (“written fortune crackers”). They are slightly bigger in size, browner, contain sesame/miso, and the fortune was wedged between the two arms of the cookie instead of hidden inside. In Japan, the fortune is known as "omikuji," and are widely found at temples and shrines across the country. The fortunes range from luck, blessings, or even curses. People receive them by giving an offering. If the person ends up with a curse, or a negative fortune, they can attach it to a tree, or a wall of wires at the temple or shrine. This allows the predication to remain where it is instead of attach itself to the person. This option is also available for people who receive positive fortunes. When they leave it at the shrine or temple, it has a greater effect (other than just good luck for them).

The American version was assumed to have originated in California, and are now spread across the globe. The only country who seemed to not be a fan of them was China who said they were "too American," so how they became a symbol of Chinese food seems to be a mystery. It might have something to do with the number of Chinese restaurants out numbering the Japanese restaurants during WWII (when the Fortune Cookie started gaining popularity). Today, there are about 3 billion cookies produced each year!

In this cache, you will find multiple fortunes that you are able to choose from! It is highly recommended that if you take a fortune, to leave one. If you are lacking the traditional slips of paper, you are more than welcome to write one on a small piece of paper. Even jokes (yes, family friendly) are welcome! Hopefully, these fortunes bring good luck for all your caching adventures. Please one fortune per cacher. I apologize for the lack of cookies, but you might be able to find some nearby.
