Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Long Point Circuit, Green's Bush, Mornington Peninsula National Park. This is a series of six caches around the circuit highlighting some of the trees you will find in Green's Bush. The cache isn't at these co-ordinates.

Greens Bush is the largest remnant of bushland on the Peninsula. Surrounded by farmland, the area contains a variety of vegetation on communities, making it a wildlife haven and excellent place for nature walking. History In 1926 the Green family purchased 900 hectares of land for farming but retained much of the natural bushland. After extensive clearing across the Peninsula, the National Trust listed the Green property as classified landscape in 1974. In 1975 the State government purchased 500 hectares from the Greens with the intention of creating a park. Funds were limited, and in 1986 a public appeal was launched by the Victorian Conservation Trust to buy the remaining area. Over $1.3 million was raised and following purchase, Greens Bush is now part of Mornington Peninsula National Park. The Caches The Long Point Circuit is approx 4.3 Km and takes you through typical Eucalypt woodland that you will find in Green's Bush. There are six caches along the circuit, most highlighting the trees that grow in Green's Bush. In some of the caches you will find a clue to help solve this mystery cache. You will find this cache to the following co-ordinates: S 38 AA. BBB E 144 CC. DDD I recommend that you park at the co-ordinates as this is the easiest access to the circuit. When you reach the circuit take the right hand walking track and follow this all the way to the Two Bays Walking Track. Whilst on this section why not grab Muzza's "Long Point-Two Bays Track # 5". You do not need to go bushbashing, most caches are just off the track and are all easily accessible. Please re-hide the caches properly for the enjoyment of other caches. Hope you enjoy the series and Green's Bush. Cinnamon Fungus has been identified in this area. It is spread through infected plants and the movement of contaminated soil and gravel, and there is no known cure. PLEASE TAKE APPROPRIATE MEASURES TO HELP MINIMISE THE SPREAD OF THE PATHOGEN INCLUDING; Where available, use boot cleaning stations and vehicle wash down bays. Obey all track and road closure signs. Do not enter areas of vegetation that have been quarantined. In infected areas remain on formed roads, tracks and pathways at all times. For full information (SEE HERE)   Blackwood- Acacia Melanoxylon. Most wattle species are short lived but Blackwoods are long lived and can grow to a height of 30 Meters. They typically grow in moist areas with deep soils. They flower from August to October and have small creamy coloured pom poms. They are a hardwood and have beautiful coloured grain and are used in the making of kitchens, furniture etc. This tree is a large old tree, as are quite a few examples in this area. There are Blackwoods right around the circuit.
