Maslinovik is an old watchtower set on a hill on the north side of the Stari Grad Plain. Built in the 4th century BC by the ancient Greek settlers, it formed part of the line of defence for the fields, running from the town of Pharos (today’s Stari Grad) to Tor, a second watchtower set high on the cliffs above Jelsa.
Maslinovik is situated on a low hill at the north end of the land division, some 3km from Stari Grad. There is a tower as a part of the unique system of defence. It was situated between the similar tower of Tor and Pharos itself. When the enemy was seen on the sea from the observation tower of Tor, the smoke signals would have been sent to the tower of Maslinovik and on to Pharos. That was also a way to protect the field itself. Here you can also have a beautiful view onto the Greek division of land. Suddenly you have the opportunity to meet the rich Mediterranean agriculture and the antique heritage of the land division. This is the right way to get to the ancient Pharos.
