Wacky GeoWeb Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

SpiderTracks: Decided that this one has outlived its popularity and the container was shot, so I decided its time to call it quits. Thanks everyone for the fun I had as you worked your way through this one. Best wishes all.

Geocache Description:

Not a "walk in the park" or a "quick score" cache. But instead, a chance for a little thought, reasoning and navigating with lots of use of the GPSr in non-typical but FUN fashion. The terrain consists of some dirt road, some 2-track needing high clearence, and just a little hiking. It can be done in 2 or 3 hours. You'll see some pretty country.

Cache is NOT at the coordinates shown above. But that is a good place to start orienteering your way to the cache - on the ground or on a map - using only several bits of the information in Step 1. This will get you to checkpoint A for the first of Step 2. Before starting, be sure to set your GPSr for DECIMAL DEGREES (ddd.ddddd) format and TRUE NORTH. And...don't use reverse (reciprocal) bearings to try to project backwards from the places to find CkptA. See our log for Dec 2, 2005 for more detail on why.

.

Extra credit: Can you figure out where these familiar sounding places are in their unfamiliar locations? Also consider the curvature of the earth in coming to grips with some of the bearings shown... i.e. Virginia which has bearing of 85 degrees but is south of the equater. The GPSr gives shortest, straight-line distances. If you can find THIS Virginia on a map, use a string on a globe to check out the bearing. Its kinda interesting.

From Step one you should now have a pretty good idea where to start Step 2. We have been nearly all the way in our sedan, but do recommend high clearence for the two track that starts close to checkpoint E ... or its difficulty 1 or 2 hike of about 1/2 mile to the cache from here. Because of shorter distances, reverse (reciprocal) bearings to use backwards GOTO's WILL work in step 2.

.

You are really close. Just need to find two more checkpoints and then use logic and distances to find the cache.

.

You are looking for a 12x5x4 clear container with a white lid. It contains something of possible interest that each finder is free to take one of without trade. Items for trade are also present and include a large brass paper clip, a yellow puzzle pen from Sandstone Battleship cache, a little pocket knife, a large key for room #203 somewhere, 1980 Oregon FFA pin, Kodak #4 race car pin, yellow MS.Net super ball, #41 FrogFace geoToken, and numbers 73, 77 SpiderTracks geoTokens and some black plastic spiders.

. One item in the cache wants your participation in the form of additional information that you can get with your GPSr while at the site. Hopefully you will find it interesting in terms of just where you are in this Wacky GeoWeb we call The World .
