I was exploring this part of town thinking there weren't many geocaches here, and I also noticed there were lots of little islands with trees that made for a lovely spot. I decided to dedicate this group of six island caches to the six Hawaiian islands, Hawai'i, Maui, Lanai, Moloka'i, Oahu and Kauai.
Molokai is known for being "Hawaiian by nature" because of its high numbers of Native Hawaiian population and beautiful unspoiled landscapes. There are only 7,000 residents of the island and no traffic lights, so natural wonders such as theHalawa Valley remain pristine are reflective of an earlier time in the history of the islands.
One of the most famous aspects of Molokai's history includes its time as a colony for people suffering from leprosy (Hansen's disease) from 1866 to 1969. A Belgian missionary, Father Damien, set up a colony in an isolated portion of the island to care for the patients which you can now visit at the Kalaupapa National Historical Park, which is best accessed by a 2 mile mule ride.
