Great Esker is maintained by the Town of Weymouth. It is highly accessible for walking, hiking, and bicycling as well as kayaking in the Weymouth Back River, which winds along side of the Great Esker. Picnic areas are available.
Graced by salt marshes and reversing falls, Great Esker features more than six miles of trails where visitors can enjoy beautiful views. Bird watching is a popular activity as osprey, great blue heron, snowy egrets, red-tailed hawks, owls and many other species of birds are abundant seasonally.
The posted coordinates will not take you to the cache, they are your starting point. This is a two stage letterbox hybrid, you'll have to use the clues below and search for stage one like one would a regular letterbox.
An interesting feature of Great Esker Park is the Reversing Falls. This Letterbox Hybrid will take you right to the Falls. The “Falls” are not a waterfall, but a tidegate, a narrowing of land a little higher than the rest, and at the large kettle hole that they call the bathtub, about a minute before high tide, the water pours in one direction for about 10 minutes, and then reverses with the water moving in the opposite direction. It's a great spot for food for birds because the fish are moving with the tide.
To find the cache:
Using your GPSr or phone app., make your way to the posted coordinates (Trailhead). At trailhead, you can either: 1) Walk up the steep trail (dirt w/stone steps). When you reach the paved path take a left and walk approximately 36 steps and look to your right. You will see a signpost for Reversing Falls. 2) For a slightly longer but gentler approach, You can continue along the paved path curving up. When you reach the paved path at the top, take the left and walk until you see the signpost for Reversing Falls on your right. At the signpost for Reversing Falls, follow the trail, keeping right at all intersections. The walk is .19 mi “As the crow flies” but, we have to walk so it is a little longer. The trail drops down to the Reversing Falls (pictured above). In front of you, just before the Reversing Falls is an evergreen tree. There is what you seek!
