On this site, August 19, 1965, Sandy’s fast food restaurant opened in Kewanee. The Sandy’s system was originally founded by Gust E. Lundberg, Robert C. Wenger, C. Paul White, Jr. and Kenneth Andris. It was home of the 15 cent hamburger (unheard of in those days). “Thrift and Swift” was Sandy’s Scottish slogan with red and gold plaid their primary colors. A young woman dressed in kilt and dancing a Highland step was mounted on top of the lighted sign along Tenny Street. One of their most popular sandwiches was the “Hi Lo”, The owners of the property now say that parts of the original Sandy’s building can be found above the drop ceiling and in other now hidden parts of the structure.
