Geocache Description:

This is a short hike to take you by a very impressive granite block railroad underpass.

This is a short hike to show you a granite block railroad underpass. The railroad bed was for the Marlboro line, which started in downtown Marlboro, came through here and continued to the Skeeterville cache, before going to Acton. A section of it just south of here in Marlboro is paved for walking and bicycling - hopefully the rest will be upgraded soon. I believe the bridge was put in to allow cattle to graze on the hilltop.

Parking is at 42 22.856 N and 071 34.171 W.

You will start off in view of some home's backyards, so please try to be a little inconspicuous at first - soon the trail becomes hidden from the neighborhood's view. The trail may be a little muddy in spots, and there is some poison ivy off the trail. Sorry about the shopping carts and tires - kids take them from the nearby supermarkets and plunge them to their death off the bridge. Despite the litter, I thought this was an impressive landmark.

The cache is at ground level - it is not necessary to climb on the bridge to find it. On top is interesting, but is dangerous for children (some boards are missing). Just a bit south of the bridge, about 4 feet to the left side of the trail, is a vertical rail post that serves as a telltale. You can see metal rods hanging down from the horizontal rod that would have extended over the tracks. Their purpose was to warn brakeman that a bridge was coming and that they needed to duck. I found this telltale about 6 years ago, could not find it 3 years ago, or 1 year ago when I looked again, and walked right past it again tonight. It blends in so well with the trees, but it is right there - you just have to look for it. It is just a bit further down the trail after the cache, but before the trail diversion. The cache is filled with kids toys. Please log in, swap something, and make sure you find the telltale.
