Description
Caution: This place is dangerous. Be prepared to meet stray dogs, lonely fishermen, scrap hunders and other strange people.. I didn't meet anything of that but I think it's possible.
The better way to go to the cache is by vehicle, bicycle or foot. It is not far away from Eleusina. The road to the mine is asphalted till the parking waypoint. You can leave your car there. The terrain is smooth and dirt. You don't need special shoes or other stuff to find the cache. Actualy you can go by car in front of it. It is also accesible by wheelchairs if you will be tranfered by car to the spot but you need an offroad wheelchair to get to the reference point (or see the hint) and somebody to climb for you.
The coordinates of the cache are not the correct. You have to pass from the reference point and get the clue. After you park you have to go to the reference waypoint. It is one level higher of the parking location. From the reference waypoint you will have a nice view of the sea and the shipwreck. If you are at the reference point, how many drop square metal holes can you see at the concrete silo? Keep the number in mind!
Now go to the registered coordinates and look the North. You see a big stone wall in front of the port, at the edge of the field. Start counting from the left the small holes you see on the wall to fit the number of the square metal holes you count before at the reference point plus one. That's your hole!
Go there and climb the wall to the hole. It is about 3 meters high, so you need to climb carefully (actually it is one step climbing). Get the cache (a small size plastic box with a small bottle within, all in a plastic bag). Log in and then put it safe back.
About the place
This mine was found by Dimitrios Skalistiris on 1935. He started the mining then on 1967 his son Michalis continued the mining till 1999. Since then the mine is closed and secured till 2005. After 2005 the mine is abandoned and has been vandalized from scrap hunders.
There are three tunnels but it is not recommended to get in, because is deathly dangerous. I have read about one murder and some strange ceremonies have been taken place at the location. So please be prepared to meet whatever. It is not recommended for kids without adults.
The cache created with my friend "panatso" :)
Enjoy Geocaching!
