John Olerud played with the Toronto Blue Jays from 1989 until 1996. Wearing a batting helmet at all times on the field, he was instantly recognizable when playing first base.
Olerud's most successful season took place in 1993. That year he won the American League "Player of the Month" award on two separate occasions. He finished third in MVP voting. According to Fan Graphs, Olerud was 8.3 wins above replacement in 1993. John Olerud also maintained a 26 game hitting streak in 1993, from May 26, to Jun 22.
The biggest storyline for much of the '93 season was Olerud's batting average. He batted above or near .400 for much of the season, up until August 2nd. According to Sports Illustrated, the last player to bat .400 that late in the season was Hall of Famer Ted Williams in 1941.
Despite being benched in favour of Paul Molitor during game three (Molitor had a hot bat and could not D.H. in Philadelphia), Olerud played an important role in the World Series that year. John Olerud's 1993 season is still considered one of the greatest ever by a Toronto Blue Jay.
