Hello! I didn’t see you standing there! I understand you are looking for adventure! Come along and I can tell you about mine!
Who am I? My name is John Colter. Still don’t know who I am? I don’t blame you. Many people don’t know much about me. I bet you know my employers though. Let me give you a hint: what is the name of the building you are standing near? That’s right! Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were appointed by our then-coming president Thomas Jefferson for this expedition. They needed many people to help them on their journey. That is where I come in. Some of the other helpers were John Ordway and Joseph Whitehouse just to name a few. All of us knew how to hunt and were used to a hard life. But, that is enough about us! I know, you are excited to start your adventure. In order to do this, you are going to need to find different information along the way to find the container. This path is all paved; but, the container is not easily wheelchair accessible.
For our adventure, we needed about $2,500 in supplies, and total cost of about $40,000 (over 1 billion USD today!); but you are just going to need a pen, GPS, and possibly some paper to help you calculate the information. You will find information at 3 different stages. It is important that you follow directions and be careful of the Muggles that tend to explore the area! Let’s stop this talking and get going!
If you notice where you are standing there is a metal statue with 3 people. Around it, you will find information boards to help explain the different sites in the area. To find part of the coords, you will need to find the name of the park that was a tribute to where we camped and the winter we were there. Add the value of the letters of our campsite (A=1, B=2, etc.), and triple it, then add ten to find GHI and the year to find ABCX.
On to stage 2. You will see a pathway that has a number of buffalo along it. I remember seeing so many buffalo. Captain Lewis remarked, “so gentle that we pass near them ... without appearing to excite any alarm.” On your buffalo, you will see engraved names. On one you will find the name “Lois Bergquist.” Who was her husband ? Take the value of his name and multiply times 2 and add half of 34. This will give you D and E.
Once you have completed that, you will continue down the path and find information about how we travelled on the river. These items were anywhere from 50-70 feet in length. We would use wind power, oars or long poles to push the boat forward. What was the type of the watercraft? To find “F”, what is the value of the 5th letter in the name of our transportation?
Just as your adventure is about to close, mine did also on 23 September 1806. Once you completed your task, please sign the logbook and hide everything as you found it, or better! I hope you enjoyed the adventure!
