Anapala Chasm was an important source of water for the people of the nearby villages, and until the introduction of more suitable containers they used to make the arduous hike to the chasm to carry water in containers made from dried coconuts.
It is reputed that water from Anapala Chasm was used to anoint past royalty on the island. Since the advent of pumping fresh water from bores on the island, fresh water is no longer collected from the chasm.
