Rovinj je u drugoj polovici 19. stoljeća bio gospodarsko središte Istre i tada su ga nazivali gradom tvornica. Naime, godine 1847. godine u Rovinju je otvoren prvi parni mlin i tvornica za proizvodnju tjestenine, 1857. godine imao je cementaru i uljaru, 1872. godine tvornicu duhana, a 1882. godine tvornicu stakla i preradu ribe te je sve to utjecalo da se Rovinj veže uz željezničku mreže.
Izgradnja pruge Kanfanar – Rovinj započela je u Rovinju 23. prosinca 1873. godine, a prvi je vlak stigao u Rovinj 19. kolovoza 1876. godine. Iz Kanfanara pruga se u jednakomjernom padu spušta za Rovinj te uz Limsku dragu preko Okreta, Sošića i Rovinjskog sela pruga stiže u rovinjski zaljev Valdiboru. Na ukupnoj dužini pruge od 21 km bile su dvije postaje, dva stajališta, dva mosta, trideset i jedan cestovni prijelaz te je maksimalna brzina bila 40 km/h. Postaja Rovinj bile je izvrgnuta morskim valovima te je more nekoliko puta odnijelo po dužini postojeći nasip, zbog čega je obala zaštićena velikim kamenim stijenama.
Ova lokalna pruga šezdesetih je godina počela gubiti ekonomsko značenje i posljednji zvižduk lokomotive u Rovinju čuo se 20. listopada 1966.
