HAVE A CAPTAIN COOK!
This multi-cache combines observation and simple mathematics to introduce you to some of the facts and figures about the Captain Cook Bridge. Along the way you will learn about the history and opening of this marvellous piece of engineering. Use the information at each waypoint to reach your ultimate goal - the Captain Cook Bridge cache!
Your journey starts in a park and wharf (WP1) alongside the Captain Cook Bridge. From here you will be required to make some observations and answer some questions as you make your way to WP2, WP3, WP4, WP5 and finally GZ. Despite the five WPs to reach GZ, they are very easy to find as you make your way across the bridge. It requires some walking (or cycling, but no driving!) to get from one WP to the next and eventually to the cache - a distance of about 2 km. The cache should able to be found in one go (if you have a spare hour or so and a calculator!). It is best done on foot or bicycle to take in the sights and snap some photos along the way. There really is no need to drive to the final stage unless you decide to complete the task over more than one day.
WP1: At the given coordinates look south east towards Captain Cook Bridge.
- A = the number of spans.
- BC = the total number of pylons.
WP2: Can be found at S 34° 00.343 E 151° 07.697. At these coordinates there is a plaque recognising an award. There is also a light pole with letters and numbers on it next to the plaque.
- D = Number of significant figures in the cost of building the bridge.
- EF = Number of months (inclusive) from commencement to completion of the bridge.
WP3: Can be found at S 34° 00.473 E 151° 07.648. At these coordinates there is a plaque providing information about the length and height of the bridge.
- GH = Clearance height (in feet) above high tide at the centre of the bridge.
- IJ = Height (in feet) of the footway above high tide.
- K = Number of letters in the month this plaque was erected.
WP4: Can be found at S 34° 00.603 E 151° 07.597. At these coordinates there is a plaque providing information about the opening of the bridge. There is also a light pole.
- LM = the total number of light poles on both sides of the bridge. Count them or go back to WP2!
- N = the number of letters in the surname of the person who opened the bridge.
WP5: Can be found at S 34° 00.746 E 151° 07.509. You are not quite at GZ yet. Just a few more observations and calculations to get to GZ and the cache. Stand and face south. You will see a small plaque on the edge of the road.
- OPQR = The year on the plaque.
- STUV = Turn around and face north. On the pole is a number. The last 4 digits.
- W = Have a Captain Cook at the letters on the pole. Number of letters (count them carefully!).
- X = Have a Captain Cook towards the north. The number of lanes on the bridge.
- YZ = The age the bridge turned in 2015.
Before you head to the cache take some time to "Have a Captain Cook" at the Captain Cook! It was built to replace the ferry service that transported vehicles and passengers and ran between Sans Souci and Taren Point across the Georges River from 1911. Contemplate the significance of this bridge and it's linking of the St George area with the Sutherland Shire. The bridge was designed to have the capacity to carry 30,000 vehicles on a weekday, and in 2015 the bridge was estimated to be carrying 30,600 vehicles per weekday. Quite accurate estimations for so long ago! Take some photos along the way and upload them when you log your FOUND IT (though no spoilers of the plaques please!).
The coordinates for the cache are:
SOUTH 034° (S-U)(N*T).(P-A)(I-W)(H-O)
EAST 151° (K*Z)(D+E).(M+W)(F/C)(F+V-E)
Each calculation in the brackets equals the value of one digit. There is no need to try any BIDMAS here!
You can check your answers for this puzzle on GeoChecker.com.
The cache is now a fake rock. Be aware of potential muggles nearby! GZ can get quite busy on weekends and evenings!
And don't forget to replace the cache and any camo in the original hiding spot as you found it please!
This is my first multi. I hope you succeed!
Congratulations to The Hancock Clan for FTF - and within 24 hours!
Congratulations to Seemyshell and Aries44 for joint 2TF - even if it took them 24 hours to complete the multi!
And to wazza9 and Nana Nel for joint 3TF.
