Geocache Description:

BETHEL METHODIST CHURCH

BETHEL (Treneglos) METHODIST CHURCH

The single storied Sunday school building was the first Bethel Chapel used for worship for the Bible Christians of the area opening on 29th August 1838. Serving mainly the parishes of Treneglos and Warbstow. Land was offered at Youlton (Warbstow) but it was decided to use the existing Sunday School  plot near Goads Green. This land was conveyed on 19th May 1838.

James THORNE who later succeeded William O’BRYAN as leader of the Bible Christian movement preached at the opening services.

The new Chapel is a single-storied chapel with a rectangular floor plan, window arches, a triple lancet window, porch and a gabled, slate roof. It was listed as a Grade II building on 11 January 1989. it’s first service was held on Thursday 8th December 1881 on a much larger plot with burial ground.

The granite obelisk in the graveyard is a memorial to John and Catherine WORDEN who were stalwarts at Bethel and to the Week St Mary Circuit. She was the daughter of John and Grace PEARCE of Youlton Farm in whose house the Bible Christians met before the first Chapel opened.
