Geocache Description:

This is a cemetery that has been around since the 1800's.  There are many individuals here that have served in the military.

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries and historic sites built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just over two years, the quest has grown to five hundred caches hidden in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and Ontario and the hiders have grown to THIRTY cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams have logged over 20,500 finds. .

This quest will bring you to Fairfield Cemetery in Guilford Township of Hendricks County.  There are two sections to this cemetery on different sides of the street.  It is well maintained and contains many different types of headstones dating back to the early 1800's.  The smaller section of this grave located across the street from the larger section consists mainly of very old graves dating back to very early in 1800.  It is difficult to read many of the headstones due to erosion and time.

I located the grave of a Charles Caplinger who served in Company F 165th Infantry.  He was killed at the battle of Chateau Thierry in 1918.  This battle occurred on July 18, 1918 during World War I and was one of the first actions of the American Expeditionary Forces under General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing.

I saw many who served in World War II and Vietnam.  Others were just listed by the particular branch they served with.  I had never come across anyone with this particular battle listed before.

Take some time and look around at all the grave markers.  It is always interesting.

No NIGHT Caching.
