Welcome to Valens Conservation Area, a 300-hectare mecca for campers, anglers and outdoor lovers. With its 10 kilometres of trails and 300-metre wetland boardwalk. Visitors can also climb the observation tower, offering a stunning view of the surrounding forests and reservoir. While beautiful any time of year, autumn has become a popular viewing season due to the migrating waterfowl and colour changes in the area landscape.
I like to come down to the south side of the reservoir for a number of reasons. Usually I am hunting for some butterflies, dragonflies or damselflies but it is also popular with the fishermen here. (I also like this trail because it tends to be a quieter area of the conservation area, away from the obnoxious radio players). This cache is a "regular" size because I like some room for TB and trade items, it is placed in the row of willows on, the south end of the reservoir, just a few metres of the fishing trail. This trail is right by the waters edge so it may be a bit damp! Often times I take the high road just a little further south but you will NOT be able to access the cache from that direction...there are thick shrubs if you try it from the wrong side. See the waypoints for some intersections and hints to keep you on the easy path.
After grabbing the cache you can continue on down the trail and observe the dam and water control structure.
If you are interested in odes there are some rare Eastern Red Damsels - Amphiagrion saucium on the south (downstream) side of the dam where a small seep keeps the low ditch area at the base of the dam moist most of the summer (exactly what they need for habitat). Blink and you may miss the seep, and the damsels! (they are TINY...but this cache is not!)
