***Walking or cycling into View Road is recommended***
***Residential building, please be discreet***
View Road Hospital is a former psychiatric hospital, and operated between 1975 to 2001. Go uphill and after a bend, the road leads straight to its gates. Due to overcapacity at Woodbridge Hospital (now IMH), the hospital was formed after the Batu Rimau Gurkha Barrack was transferred to the MInistry of Health and repurposed as a hospital branch to rehabilitate patients. After the new IMH facilities were completed, View Road Hospital was closed in 2001.
Today the building serves a different purpose. After the hospital vacated the building it was abandoned, until it was turned into a foreign worker domitory several years back. Then, it was abandoned again. Now, it is a worker's domitory again. While it was not used to house people, it was sometimes used by local drama producers for a abandoned-looking site to shoot at.
Due to the stigma of mental illness, this place has been called one of the most haunted places in Singapore. Perhaps so when there were no one living there, but with the workers staying there, the area can be quite lively.
Baracks, hospital, dormitory. What next for this historic building?
Optional: If you walk through or around the fenced up compound to the back of the buildings, you will see a hill, and on it a small building. View Road was so named because from the top of that hill had a nice view of the surrounding area.
