Lately I have placed a few puzzle caches based on the English language and homographs.
Homographs are words that have multiple meanings. For example, a whip is called a cat, but a cat is also a pet. A pet is a family animal, like a cat or a dog, but pet can also mean to stroke; so you can pet your pet! It's a crazy language!
I enjoy doing crossword puzzles and especially enjoy those which have clever definitions. Most clever definitions are based on homographs, or double meanings. For example, a "low digit" sounds like "one" or "two" or "three", but the clever answer is "toe". This makes for a difficult crossword puzzle and an even more difficult Geocache puzzle.
Here is a word puzzle that uses homographs. I hope that you enjoy it.
First determine the word represented by the definition. Then perform the necessary calculations to get the coordinates of the final. You'll need to know how to calculate the digital root (DR) and alpha sum (AS) for words to complete the calculations. The number of letters in the answer is indicated by the 'dashes'. I've filled in some letters to help you solve it.
A. Has a head and hops---> L _ _ _ _ . Calculate (AS - 3) / 5.
B. Stage Part --------> R _ _ _ . Calculate DR.
C. "Good" sign ----------> H _ _ _ . Calculate (AS / DR) - 1.
D. Floored ----------> T _ _ _ _ . Calculate (AS / 10) - DR.
E. Toy with runners ----------> _ _ _ E . Calculate DR.
F. Bacon bit ----------> _ _ _ _ Y . Calculate ((AS -9) / 10) - DR.
G. Ring around the collar ----> _ _ _ . Calculate (AS + 6) / 10.
H. High beams ---> _ _ F _ _ _ _ . Calculate DR.
The final is at N43 5A.BCD W78 0E.FGH.
The final is on the side of a road. Park carefully and be aware of the traffic. Final is a micro, so please BYOP and write small.
