Geocache Description:

Welcome to the St Georges Lake loop. A 2km loop of easy to medium terrain, this track will take you right around the recently upgraded St Georges Lake. Allow 40mins-1hr. The biggest dam upgrade ever undertaken by Parks Victoria has seen over 20,000 cubic meters of earth removed from the wall, a new spillway installed, visitor facilities upgraded and the overall level of the dam lowered to future proof it against flooding.

This short series will take you around the lake and highlight some of the animal species you may see (or hear) as you go.

Animal Species - Grey Fantail Wren

The Grey Fantail is most easily recognised by its constantly fanned tail and agile aerial twists and turns. Both sexes are similar in appearance: grey above, with white eyebrow, throat and tail edges. This species is quite inquisitive and will closely approach an observer (in fact one was very inquisitive when placing this cache, hence the name!).

They feed on flying insects, which they catches by chasing them from the edge of foliage at all levels in the canopy.

The Grey Fantail builds its nest in a thin tree-fork, unusually between 2 and 5 metres from the ground. It is made of fine grass bound together with large amounts of spider web. The bottom of the nest is drawn out into a long stem, resembling that of a wine-glass. Both parents share nest-building, incubation of the eggs and feeding of the young when they hatch. They will occasionally visit densely-planted urban gardens, particularly during the winter migration and often makes use of eucalypt trees.

This path can be busy during warmer weather, so take care not to reveal its location. A 1L sistema container, its hidy-hole should be obvious, gps may jump around a bit due to the tree cover.

Please take care in the warmer months. This is Australia, there are snakes.
