Like other villages of its period, Dufftown has spacious streets laid out in a regular plan. The four main streets converge at the Clock Tower, which was completed in 1839. The Clock Tower was originally the town jail but is now home to the Tourist Information Centre.
Dufftown is in the heart of Speyside and is situated on the banks of the rivers Fiddich and Dullan at the foot of the Conval hills. It is the location of several Scotch whisky distilleries. It produces more malt whisky than any other town in Scotland. It is said that "Rome was built on seven hills, Dufftown stands on seven stills".
According to the third film in the Harry Potter series, Hogwarts, the main setting of the series, is said to be close to Dufftown in an article of the Daily Prophet.
The cache is in a public garden for the Dufftown War Memorial. The garden is at the northern end of Balvenie Street and is in remembrance to Mortlach parishioners who died in World War I and World War 2.
The memorial is in the form of a bronze gothic cross with attendant angels on top of granite pillar. It was unveiled in November 1920 by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.
The foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught, in April 1920.
Cache placed with the kind permission of The Moray Council Land and Parks Officer.
This cache was hidden for the Mafia Hide Day 2015. This event was created in 2014 by geocachers in Starkville, Mississippi USA to increase the number of caches in the area and to generate some excitement! Many thanks to GF1967 for partnering with Pushmataha to help maintain this geocache!
Congratulations to 208Buccaneers for the First to Find!
