Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave of A. M. Barringer, a Veteran of the Civil War.

On December 19, 1863, a young man, just 17 years old, enlisted in Company K of the 8th Alabama Cavalry and then mustered in as a Private on January 29, 1864. The unit was known as Hatch’s Brigade, under Lieutenant Colonel Lemuel Hatch from Greene County. At their first engagement, the brigade fought in a “desperate encounter” at Lafayette, Georgia. There Hatch was wounded and captured, command was passed to Colonel Ball. The brigade has been referred to as Hatch’s, or Ball’s and even Ball/Hatch.

The brigade surrendered at the end of the war at Gainesville, Florida and Private Barringer was paroled at Tuscaloosa in April, 1865.
