I was way down south close to the Cranston area (almost need a passport to be way down there) when I received a call from green ducks. She was having problems finding a cache that I had previously found with NurseB33. I gave her some instructions about where to search. A short time later, I called her and she still had not found the illusive cache. Since I wasn't too far away, I told her I would be there within minutes. I met her at the parking spot and we proceeded to GZ. I had a general memory of where it was but couldn't remember the details. After searching for a few seconds where I figured it was hiding but couldn't quite remember, I turned around and spotted it in plain site. When I pointed it out to her, she was a bit embarrassed since she had been looking for a long time. I had just witnessed a very rare event, that even a superb cache finder like green ducks can have instances of not seeing for looking. Although to be fair, my initial poor instructions probably resulted in a much longer search than usual for her.
Anyway after a very nice chat we went our separate ways. I planned on checking out some potential cache hiding spots somewhere in the deep south so I headed off out of the Cranston area and headed west. This is when I had trouble of my own. I sometimes have difficulty getting around without getting lost especially in the new communities of Calgary. My GPS batteries failed and my car GPS was sitting at home on my book shelf. I had my new phone so I figured I would be OK but alas, it is a new phone and I haven't figured out how the maps work yet so I did what I often do and got lost.
I made four left turns and then one right turn but that didn't help me. So then I made five right turns and that still didn't help. I was still lost. I decided to make four more right turns and then a left. Nope, still lost. So then I reversed and made one left turn followed by four right turns. I thought I was close to figuring it out but nope, still lost.
So I stopped to assess my situation. I had water and lots of gasoline so I should be OK. I knew I could either call NurseB33 since she lived not too far from where I was or I could call green ducks since I knew she was probably not too far away either and besides she's owed me for my earlier help. The problem was how could I tell them my position when I was hopelessly lost.
Sitting there, contemplating my seemingly driving in circles, I remembered when I was a teenager, just a few years ago. I had a friend, Billy, who owned a funny old British car, we called Morris. It was a small car and whenever he turned a sharp corner one of the axles would pull out by several feet and we would have to stop and jack up the car to push the axle back in. Since it was a light car and if there were a couple of us, we could often just lift one corner of the car so Bill could push the axle back in place.
Anyway, thinking about fun times in the past wasn't helping me in my current situation so I started off again and I turned right three times and then left twice. Still no help, so I then made four left turns and then a right. Now it felt like I was getting somewhere. So I made two left turns followed by three right turns. I then knew if I made four right turns and just one left turn, I would be in a familiar spot and I would survive. I was correct and I quickly headed for home glad that I survived the wilds of the deep south.
Maybe you can figure out just where I was lost. It was somewhere close to N50 5?.??? W114 0?.???
