Broken Hills ore body was first discovered in 1883, and are claimed to be 1,800 million years old. It was founded by Charles Rasp born in Stuttgart German who moved to Australia in 1869 to improve his health. He reported finding a large amount of galena, Sphalerite, cerussite and other oxide minerals. The most important to him was galena which is the primary source of lead. Other metal that were found within Broken Hill that became a secondary source of income was extremely high silver grades, including native silver, and other rare silver minerals present in abundance. Where you stand today you can see before you a jagged black outcrop, this is the weathered surface or gossan which is an exposed oxidized portion of a mineral vein which cropped out over a length of 2.5 Kilometres. The Gassan cap of this massive orebody contained mainly manganese oxides, iron oxides and quartz and averaged 10-15% lead. But the silver content was not spectacular Hundreds of millions of years ago the orebody was composed entirely of sulphide minerals containing large amounts of lead, zinc and sulphur with small amounts of silver. Locate The Lode Outcrop sign within the Junction Mine Area Question 1 – In front of you is the jagged black out crop, How hard is the black rock can it be scratched or broken easily with your hands? Question 2 – How does the black rock feel, is it smooth, rough, powdery etc? Question 3 - What other coloured rocks can be seen in this area and how do they compare to the black ones? Question 4 – Looking at the outcrop can you see any recent evidence of erosion? How many years do you think it would take for it all to erode away?
