This cache has been archived.

chartmaker: This geocache has gone missing. As it is in an area I used to visit quite often but no longer visit near as often I am taking the action of archiving this hide. It had a good run and helped to educate many people along the way.

Geocache Description:

This is not a giant golf ball but it is something many of us use everyday, 'whether' we know we use it or not. Hope the weather is good for geocaching.

Just a nice roadside grab, no need to access the site. Watch the traffic.

We all talk about the weather but we cannot do much about the weather. What we can do is pay attention to what is going on around us weatherwise when we are out and about by watching the sky, paying attention to the wind and making use of the local forecasts. Located just east of Exeter this 'golf ball' is one of several weather radar locations operated by Environment Canada across Ontario. Southern Ontario and the areas around the Great Lakes are well covered by these Canadian government operated radar sites; however there are areas across the more remote areas of northern Ontario that are not covered by these weather radar operations. Approximately 80% of Ontario is covered by weather radar coverage and the vast majority of the population of Ontario benefits from the weather radar coverage and protection.

Canadian government weather radars in Ontario are located at Exeter (north of London), King City (north of Toronto), Franktown (west of Ottawa), Britt (south of Sudbury), Timmins area, Montreal River (north of Sault Ste. Marie), Superior West (near Thunderbay) and Dryden. Information from these sites are transmitted to the Environment Canada weather centre in Downsview (Toronto) and are used to develop weather forecasts and more importantly to prepare and distribute weather watches and weather warnings for all areas of Ontario.

You may have noticed that none of the weather radars are situated in major urban centres. Part of the reason for that is that the weather radars receive better images of the weather activity (thunderstorms, rain, snow fall, etc.) from distances farther away from the weather radar sites than in the immediate vicintiy of the radar sites.

Hope you enjoy seeking the geocache and have learned a bit more about the background that goes into weather forecasts, watches and warnings.

The find should be easy, the lesson about weather radar is what this geocache hide is all about. Live and learn, thanks to geocaching.
