I wanted to leave the cache in the Ballabona service area but three years ago the whole area was flooded and we were stuck in the cafe for 5 hours as cars floated past.

The truce of 1439 between the Muslim and Christian armies recognized as the border, all points between Velez and Overa, basically the Almanzora Valley. Vera was the Muslim HQ and Lorca was in the hands of the Christians. All the middle and lower valley of Almanzora surrendered to King Ferdinand in June 1488. Ballabona or Ballagona tower stands on a hill on the border of the municipalities of Antas and Huercal-Overa from which it dominates the road to Almeria, on the left bank of the Mediterranean Highway. At 362 meters high, it was possible that it was a watchtower not a defensive tower, and would link by visual contact and be dependent on the neighbouring fortresses, especially Castle Overa.
