Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave of James Harvey George, a Veteran of the Civil War.

James enlisted as a Private in Company G of the 51st Alabama Cavalry, which was a partisan ranger unit. During the Civil War partisan ranger units were small units of conventional forces, controlled and organized as a military force for operations behind enemy lines. The Confederate Congress passed the Partisan Ranger Act in 1862 which gave these units legitimacy.

The 51st Alabama Cavalry was organized and led by Colonel John Tyler Morgan, a senator from Alabama. The 51st cooperated with Nathan Bedford Forrest in the Stone's River Campaign (1862-63), and at Chickamauga and the Knoxville Campaign.

Private James Harvey George served to the end of the war and returned to Tuscaloosa. His father, Travis Bartlett George also served in the Civil War with a different unit, died in 1864 and is buried nearby.
