Travis Bartlett George, Civil War Soldier Multi-Cache

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave of Travis Bartlett George, a soldier in the Civil War.

The Tuscaloosa Plow Boys mustered in here at the Big Creek Baptist Church in June, 1861. The men were from the immediate area of western Tuscaloosa County, and they elected James J. Mayfield their Captain.

Travis was much older than the others that mustered in; he was 55 years old as he began his service as a Private.

The history of this group describes the problem of the measles outbreak while they were in training and the subsequent assignment to the 38^th Tennessee Infantry instead of with an Alabama unit. The Plow Boys saw action at Fort Donelson, the Battle of Shiloh, the Battle of Chickamauga and the Battle of Atlanta.

Travis died before the end of the war, the records do not indicate if he was wounded, captured or killed on a battlefield.

Travis was married three times before he served in the war and from these wife had ten children. Of his children, at least one also served in and survived the Civil War, James Harvey George. His son’s grave is in this same cemetery.
