Before the development of the Welland Canal, Port Colborne and the surrounding areas were largely marsh and swamp land. With the building of the canal in 1833, and improved drainage ditches, much of the area was developed for agriculture and industrial use. But, drainage continues to be an important issue in the area.
The City of Port Colborne has been divided into three main drainage basins -- Eagle Marsh, Wignell, and Beaverdams (Or Weaver, depending on who you talk to.
At this point along Lakeshore Road East, the Wignell watershed area drains into Lake Erie. The water travelling through this drain has collected primarily from nearby farmland and Port Colborne Quarries (for an up close view of the Quarries, check out another of my caches, Nearly a View)
When the weather is good, the drains all remain open, allowing water to flow out into the lake. But on stormy nights, when the wind is from the west, you may see City Workers coming by to close the drains, preventing the backflow of excess water from Lake Erie into the drainage system.
Onto the cache itself:
You are looking for a micro-container, which was in a bag of geocaching supplies given to me by Canadiangurl before she moved out of the area. There is enough room for one or two cars to park on the North side of the road near this cache, at least until the snowbanks start to pile up. (at which point, the cache will likely be inaccessible). The drain, located across the road from this cache, is considered private property. Good luck!
