Heavy Metal (MTM #8) Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Yak127: Just shy of 10 years since placing them, I’ve decided to archive the Mountain Top Medley geoart series.

I created this series the summer before I began high school by biking around my neighborhood and scoping out possible spots. We did a big kickoff CITO event, and then the caches went live.

At 14, I don’t think I grasped that maintaining more than 20 geocaches would take a lot of work. Plus, not all of the hides were super car friendly, and growing development in the area makes some locations less ideal than they were a decade ago.

Because of that, I’m driving around to each final location, collecting the containers and archiving the cache pages. It’s a step toward being a more responsible cache owner, ten years in the making!!

I want to thank everyone who took the time to find these geocaches, and more importantly everyone who provided maintenance when the real cache owner (me) was MIA. Revisiting each GZ, it’s clear geocachers along the way have replaced containers, swapped log books and even rethought hides in ways that helped them hold up long term. For your support, I’m very, very grateful!

If nothing else, I hope this series helped others enjoy the country roads I call home, and made for some scenic drives through rural Frederick County! Thank you all!

Geocache Description:

Mountain Top Medley #8- Heavy Metal

This is the Mountain Top Medley geo-art series! It takes you on a tour of the beautiful Catoctin Mountain Area. In order to solve each geocache, you need to answer a question about a genre of music. There are 20 geocaches in the series, 2 bonus caches, a letterbox hybrid and a CITO event to kick it off.

These should all be easy finds. Most will be micros and smalls, but there will be a few regulars. They are all close by one another. I recommend solving all of the puzzles first and attempting them all at once, otherwise you may find yourself going back and forth a bit...

Notice that these caches are in the woods and are around poisonous plants, ticks, bugs, etc... Come prepared and watch out for ticks and snakes!

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock, psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are often associated with masculinity, aggression, and machismo. The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often derided by critics, a status common throughout the history of the genre. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre's evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Beginning in the late 1970s, bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden and Saxon followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal fans became known as "metalheads" or "headbangers". During the 1980s, glam metal became a commercial force with groups such as Mötley Crüe and Poison.
