Gandalf the Grey was the lead character in the War of the Ring. He was an Istari, one of five sent to Middle Earth during the Third Age from the Undying Lands in the West. At the Grey Havens, Cirdan the Shipwright foresaw future events more than any other, and understood the key role that Gandalf would play in the affairs of men and elves. He gave him the elvish ring of power Narya, the ring of fire, to kindle the spirits of men and elves in the dark days ahead. He would spend the next two thousand years studying the ways of friends and foes alike. His main purpose was to try and prevent the rise of a new evil force in Middle Earth. As the shadow of Sauron took shape again he would build an alliance of men, elves and hobbits to defeat this new power and secure a safe future for the free peoples of Middle Earth. Gandalf was a wizard of great wisdom and a keen reader of the ancient scrolls. He knew that the One Ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mt Doom and prepared to lead the fellowship of the ring on this quest.
As the years passed by, Gandalf wrote many letters to his friends to make them aware of the events unfolding in Middle Earth. This letterbox high in the Misty Mountains could well be a place where he posted letters to be picked up later by his friends as they crossed over the mountain pass.
