A piece of local history.
Mary Wilcocks was born in 1791 and, upon arriving in Almondsbury on 3rd April 1817, successfully passed herself off as Princess Caraboo from Javasu (a non-existent island) from which she claimed to have been kidnapped by pirates. Exposed ten weeks later, Mary emigrated to America returning to London in 1824 and subsequently Bedminster where she became a leech dealer. From 1851 until her death in 1864, Mary lived at Number 11 Princess Street.
