On May 2, 2000 the US government disabled selective availability, increasing the accuracy of GPS receivers everywhere. The next day, on May 3, Dave Ulmer hid the very first geocache. Within months, the new sport took off and geocaching was born.
Today there are over 2.7 million active geocaches worldwide. A little over 29,000 of these are located in our neighbor to the east, Minnesota. In North Dakota the geocaching population is a quite a bit smaller with only 2927 active geocaches. The purpose of this cache is to highlight the oldest of the remaining North Dakota caches. The nearest one on this list is the virtual Uncle John's. It is about seven miles away in Horace, ND. If you haven't visited it yet, I suggest making the trip as it is pretty impressive.
Although it was not intended, this cache was also placed on my seventh geocaching anniversary. Surprisingly, the weather today and seven years ago was unseasonably warm.
