Its origin somewhat controversial, some believe the wild horse out here to be just a feral animal, meaning that it was domesticated and then became wild as it was abandoned or escaped from Spanish explorers. Other scientists believe it to have originated in North America. The science favors the latter.
Regardless of its origin, the name Mustang comes from the Spanish word “ustengo,” which means unowned beast, or more specifically, ownerless horse. This cache, as well as at least a few more in the area, refers to the scores of wild horses that inhabit the surrounding ecosystems. Even if you don’t see one (unlikely), you can see signs of their existence from nearly any point in the wide expanse of this desert. They often travel right on the road in herds of about ten or so, including from this cache all the way to the nearby mountains. Drive carefully!
A few interesting ustengo facts:
- They are called “easy keepers” meaning that they don’t need a lot of food to stay healthy, and they have good feet, unlike many domestic horses.
- They can double their population in 4 years.
- They are beloved among cowboys for their hardiness, stamina, and loyalty. Though short, they are very strong, and can easily carry a human.
- Through the BLM, you can adopt one for about $125 provided you can prove you are able to take care of it, but a professional will need to train it for you. Once tamed, however, it will be a very loyal and trusting companion.
- Most wild horses live in Nevada. The other western states also have them, but not the population like right here in the silver state. Nevada’s state quarter features three wild mustangs.
