In his early life, Tony was considered “hyperactive” and was head strong as a perfectionist. A psych-evaluation requested by his parents determined that Tony at that time had an IQ of 144, just one point shy of genius. Skateboarding was Tony’s outlet for his excessive energy, and as his skills developed, he became a professional skateboarder at the mere age of fourteen. From that time, Tony “Birdman” Hawk won and continued to hold the National Skateboard Association Championship for twelve consecutive years.
In 1999, Tony retired from professional competitions, but continues touring North America performing personal skate shows bringing awareness to his nonprofit, the Tony Hawk Foundation, which supports projects in low-income areas and helps underprivileged kids by helping build skate parks.
