PLEASE DO NOT TAKE ALL OF THE TRACKABLES! OTHER PEOPLE COME HERE LOOKING FOR TRACKABLES TOO. DON'T RUIN THE FUN FOR OTHERS! PLEASE ONLY TAKE ONE OR TWO.
We decided to place a Travel Bug Hotel at the train station to help TB's move further along. When you sign the log (whether you take or drop off a TB) feel free to use a whole page in the log to leave us a story about what brought you to the train station, even if it was just to find this cache. Please be respectful of the train station as they were nice enough to give us permission to place this cache. Please place the cache back in the same location you found it. Since this location is bound to busy at certain times of day, stealth may be required.
There are a number of items in the cache to choose from for the FTF prize. Pick which ever you would like!
Vial Rail's History in Windsor
The train station is located at 298 Walker Rd., Windsor, ON, N8Y 2M9, Canada, behind Hiram Walkers Distillery. Via Rail operates 497 trains per week in 8 provinces, over 12,500 km of track, almost all of which is owned and operated by CN Rail. Via carries approximately 4.1 million passengers annually, the majority along the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor.
On January 12, 1977, CN spun off its passenger services as a separate Crown corporation, VIA Rail Canada. At its inception, Via acquired all CN passenger cars and locomotives. Following several months of negotiation, on October 29, 1978, Via took over operation of CP passenger train services, and took possession of cars and locomotives. At this time, Via did not own any trackage and had to pay right-of-way fees to CN and CP, sometimes being the only user of rural branch lines.
The original Canadian National Railway station was on the waterfront at the foot of Goyeau in Windsor. It was built in 1884 and closed in 1961 when service was relocated to this station in Walkerville. On November 8, 2010, Via Rail unveiled the design for a new station building to replace the existing building from the early 1960s. The new building was completed in September 2012 at a cost of $5.3 million CDN.
