現在コンビニエンスストアの駐車場になっているこの場所は慶応3（1867）年、薩摩藩によって建設された日本最初の洋式紡績工場である「旧鹿児島紡績所」の跡地です。
すぐ横には「異人館」の愛称で親しまれている旧鹿児島紡績所技師館が現存しており、貴重な木造洋風建築は、国の史跡および重要文化財に指定されています。
なお旧鹿児島紡績所技師館は、機械工場であった尚古集成館や仙巌園に残る反射炉跡とともに、日本の近代化の基となった集成館事業の一連の施設跡として、ユネスコ認定の世界文化遺産「明治日本の産業革命遺産」に含まれています。
道路をはさんだ向かい側にある薩摩藩主島津光久の別邸跡「仙巌園」には桜島を築山に、鹿児島湾を池に見立てた借景技法を用いた素晴らしい庭園があります。
島津の殿様も眺めていたであろうこの場所から、美しく雄大な桜島を存分に堪能してください！
