“This cache has been placed by the Department of Conservation as part of Conservation Week (1-8 November) 2015” Moss Bush Scenic Reserve was initially gifted to the Nelson Automobile Association (N.A.A.) by W.F. Moss in 1953. It was part of a total gift totalling 35Ha. The area was developed for members and families to picnic and camp. In the latter years the area was restricted to picnics only due to problems with campers over the summer periods. 28Ha of that parcel of land was gazetted as the W.F. Moss Scenic Reserve in 1985 and subsequently given over to the Department of Conservation in 1988. The picnic area often gets inundated when the Riwaka River is in flood, causing deposits of gravel on the large open grass area. Over the last ten years the Department of Conservation has led a regeneration project, removing many of the large willow trees and planting hundreds of native trees.
