No. 4 Newcastle Park

Newcastle Park was so named in 1978.  This riverside section of land had been owned by the Toodyay RSL Sub-Branch but was transferred into Shire ownership in the 1950s.  This was to allow access to a specially built footbridge to the newly constructed Toodyay State School just on the other side of the river.

On the naming day in June 1978 a flag-raising and tree-planting ceremony was attended by Toodyay District High School students. The following year a seat and a granite stone in the shape of Western Australia were installed as part of the Charlotte Davis memorial commemorations.  Charlotte, at 2 years of age, is claimed to be the first European female to set foot in the Swan River settlement in 1829.

In 1985 concrete paths were constructed and in 2001 redevelopment of the park by the Shire and Toodyay District High School began.  In 2002 playground equipment, funded by the Toodyay Op Shop, was installed and dedicated to Sister Evelyn Graham for her medical services to the Toodyay community. New park benches, designed and made by the high school students, were also placed in the park that year.

In 2003 landscaping continued with blue metal paths, murals and plantings and 2004 saw a gazebo installed by the Toodyay RSL Sub-Branch.  The footbridge was refurbished in 2011 through Royalties for Regions funding. Toodyay District High School remains involved in the care of the park through the Keep Australia Beautiful Adopt-a-Spot program.
